Joy, pure, unrefined, joy filled his heart when he heard the news. She was gone and good riddance; she had played with his heart, made Kira’s eyes sad and ultimately destroyed her father.
Bashir looked over at the scene, Dukat heavily sedated, Kira quietly standing in a corner tears clouding her eyes but never leaving them the mix of devastation and relief that crossed Garak’s face when he looked at her lifeless body. Bashir needed to make that hurt go away for the cardassian.
Suddenly horrified as if he had just woken from a disturbing dream the Doctor covered his mouth and run to the bathroom just next to his office he barely had time to lock the door before he threw up his lunch.
She was a child and her death was so senseless a single blast to the chest that would have killed her almost instantly. He had of course, fought to stabilize her condition it was in vain. Then it had been the moment where he had to break the news to Dukat he had never seen a Cardassian much less Dukat lose his arrogant dignity like the Cardassian did right before his eyes and when he whispered his forgiveness Bashir gave him a shot of sedative.
Bashir flushed the toilet then he used a washcloth to wipe away the vomit that had splashed his uniform, he straightened up took a deep breath, unlocked the door and prepared to walk through.
He must have been in there longer than he had thought, the infirmary was empty apart from Ziyal’s body, the lights were dim as he walked to her side, an autopsy had been requested by Sisko and Starfleet, Kira gave her permission with the order that all organs were returned to the body and all incisions healed before Ziyal’s funeral. Bashir started to gather his instruments when he heard a sob coming from his office. He put down his tricorder and walked through the doors. Nobody was visible from the door so Bashir stepped in further walking toward his desk the sob seemed to have come from there, nobody was in his chair he walked around the desk and was surprised to find Garak sat on the floor hugging himself.
“Garak?” he said softly and the cardassian looked up at him his clear blue eye shone with tears. The human crouched beside him “I am so sorry” Bashir whispered taking the Cardassians hand in his own.
“You misunderstand, Doctor” a pause then the Cardassian whispered, “Please hold me”. Bashir sat next to him and wrapped his arm around the Cardassians shoulder pulling toward him then he asked “how so?”
Then cardassian cleared his throat and gulped in some air then slowly started to speak.
“When Mr. Sisko told us that Ziyal was in the infirmary with you I had several images fill my mind all of which ended with you being hurt” again Garak paused and swallowed. “Go on” the Doctor prompted. Moving slightly closer to the Cardassian..
“I felt ….felt like the world had disappeared from beneath my feet, I had…have so much I need to talk to you about….I” again the Cardassian stopped this time he licked his lips and taking the doctor’s hand in his. “Then I got here and the first thing I saw was Ziyal lying there I heard you telling Dukat there was nothing as you could but she had died of her injury’s. I heard him forgive you and his sobs as he wept, yet I felt relief….you were fine and safe”
Bashir squeezed his hand; he was beginning to understand where this was going….or where he hoped this was going. “Does that make me a bad person?” Garak was saying and Bashir reached up and brushed his cheek with two fingers “ssh….no of course not, however I am unsure what you are saying” a pause “ I hope it is going were I think it is because…..I love you and I have been in love with you some time”
“I love you too,” Garak whispered then cool lips brushed the Doctors cheek before Garak’s body was shuddering with his sobs and the grief he felt escaped his body. Bashir held him for a long time his own tears of guilt and sorrow rolled down his face a warm arm slid around his back and they cried until exhausted.
Bashir’s head nurse found them the nest morning, smiling she thought “it’s about time” then in silence she carried out her duties and left them to sleep.
